America 250 Takes Flight Over New York

New Yorkers witnessed one of the most spectacular Independence Day celebrations in recent memory as the nation's 250th anniversary was marked by an extraordinary combination of military aviation, international participation, maritime history, and world-class aerobatics.

The celebration began on July 4 with a breathtaking military flyover that traced one of the most recognizable skylines in the world. Beginning over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, dozens of military aircraft roared northward past the Statue of Liberty and One World Trade Center before continuing up the Hudson River, creating a patriotic display that thousands lined the waterfront to witness.

Leading the formation were the world-renowned U.S. Navy Blue Angels, followed by an impressive collection of military aircraft representing the United States and allied nations.

Among the international participants were the Royal Air Force Red Arrows from the United Kingdom, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, and the United Arab Emirates' Al Fursan demonstration team, making this one of the most internationally diverse military flyovers ever seen over New York Harbor.

Adding to the historic atmosphere, a magnificent fleet of 48 Tall Ships representing 20 nations sailed proudly through New York Harbor and up the Hudson River. The sight of these majestic sailing vessels beneath modern military aircraft created a striking visual tribute to both America's maritime heritage and its modern military strength.

FourLeaf Air Show Returns to Jones Beach

The celebration continued on Long Island as the FourLeaf Air Show at Jones Beach State Park thrilled hundreds of thousands of spectators during a special Independence Day weekend  schedule. Traditionally held during Memorial Day weekend, this year's event was moved to the July 4 holiday to coincide with the nationwide America 250 celebration.

Although the official practice show was held on Friday, July 3, many beachgoers received an unexpected bonus as several performers conducted additional practice flights on Thursday, July 2, treating visitors to surprise demonstrations over the Atlantic.

The event followed a four-day schedule:

  • Friday – Practice Show
  • Saturday Evening – Fireworks Spectacular
  • Sunday – Air Show
  • Monday – Scheduled Air Show (cancelled because of weather)

Despite rain forcing the cancellation of Monday's performances, attendance figures reflected the tremendous popularity of this year's event.

  • 122,000 attended Friday's practice show.
  • 192,000 enjoyed Saturday night's fireworks.
  • 268,000 attended Sunday's air show.

Combined attendance exceeded half a million visitors, making the event one of the largest public gatherings of the holiday weekend.

                                A Tradition of Excellence

The Jones Beach Air Show has become one of the premier aviation events in the United States thanks to the efforts of many dedicated organizations.

Public relations and media operations have been managed since the event's inception in 2004 by Epoch 5 Public Relations, one of Long Island's premier public relations firms. The air show itself was originally launched by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Jones Beach State Park.

Known for many years as the Bethpage Air Show, the event is now presented as the FourLeaf Air Show following the title sponsorship of FourLeaf Federal Credit Union, while continuing its successful partnership with New York State Parks.

                                     World-Class Aviation

This year's lineup featured an outstanding collection of military and civilian performers from around the globe.

Crowd favorite demonstrations included the precision flying of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the Royal Air Force Red Arrows, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, and the United Arab Emirates' Al Fursan demonstration team. Throughout the performances, brilliant streams of red, white, and blue smoke painted the skies above Jones Beach, adding to the patriotic atmosphere.

Together, these performers delivered a nearly nonstop display of speed, precision, and aerial artistry that kept the crowd captivated throughout the day. Joining the military teams were numerous civilian performers whose precision flying and daring aerobatics showcased the remarkable skill of today's professional aviators. Spectators enjoyed performances from Sean D. Tucker, John Klatt's Screamin' Sasquatch Jet Waco, the Misty Blues All-Women Skydiving Team, Matt Chapman, the American Airpower Museum's historic warbirds, and the iconic B-17 Yankee Lady, among many others.

                                       Looking Ahead

Following this year's special Independence Day celebration, the FourLeaf Air Show will return to its traditional Memorial Day weekend schedule in 2027. Preliminary plans call for performances on May 29 and May 30, once again bringing the sights and sounds of military and civilian aviation back to the shores of Jones Beach.

For photographers, aviation enthusiasts, veterans, and families alike, the 2026 America 250 celebration offered a memorable reminder of our nation's history, the professionalism of today's armed forces, and the enduring spirit that continues to unite Americans beneath the red, white, and blue skies.
