The FOUR “P” ’s

I like to think of myself as a person who is very dedicated to photography, I eat, drink, wake and sleep thinking about photography.  Always looking for the next great photo.  Always thinking how to make my photos better or how to get the next unusual shot.

But in the past year I find myself lacking the motivation to do that.  Between the hibernation of Covid-19, and now the cold weather I don't seem to have the drive I once had to go the extra mile.

I recently went out with friends to shoot, and what happened that night has stuck in my head for the past few days so I though I would make this blog post.

What is required for getting that extraordinary shot are the FOUR P's.

Preparation, Passion, Patience and Perseverance

An example: The other night I planned with Fred and Tom to go to Captree to photograph the Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter. I arrived first and on the way over the first Robert Moses Bridge I called Fred and Tom and told them there was a fog covering most of Fire Island. I figured they might not want to waste the trip.

Since I was there I was going to play with other photos. ( you shoot what you see when what you planned for is not available) Both Tom and Fred said they were coming anyway. While I waited I took some photos of the sun going down over the RM Bridge.

PASSION: We all have the passion to photograph but all of us being individuals, have different LEVELS of passion. Some pick up a camera just once in a while, and others are out every day. Some are fair weather photographers and others make the effort to get the shot no matter what the weather or difficulty.

PREPARATION: I “THOUGHT” I was prepared, but Fred was more prepared. He was wearing several layers of clothing both uppers and lowers. I was not.

PATIENCE: I THOUGHT that since is was cloudy and also because I was cold that it would be a waste of time.

PERSEVERANCE: I went home early AND Tom left with me but Fred stayed and GOT THE SHOT What does this tell you? If you are REALLY willing and able, you can get the shot you want in almost all situations.

Just remember the 4 P’s and lets not forget the 6 P’s either!

Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Photography

Congratulations to Fred and all the others like him that have the determination and all their P's lined up in a row.
